We've all seen this movie a thousand times. The bad guy brutalizes some poor soul in the opening. A liberal judge and greedy lawyer get the creep off on a technicality. Then Dirty Harry comes in. Tortures and shoots the bad guy and all is once again right in the world.
As we leave the theater, most of us understand it was just a movie designed to get us on an emotional roller coaster and leave it at that. It was a couple hours of entertainment.
That leaves the rest of the audience though. About 25 to 30% that think this stuff is real and without Dirty Harry, criminals would run amok and destroy the fabric of our society. These people are also the target demographic of republican propaganda.
The republicans have built their propaganda machine around Dirty Harry movie plots. Whatever the issue, terror trials in New York. Health care. Abortion. School prayer. It's always intertwined with somehow not being on the republican side is destroying America. Emboldening terrorists. Or bringing us closer to a socialist state. One of their current favorite phrases is to call everything a "job killer." These republicans are a violent lot.
I use the 25 to 30% figure because polls tell us that that is how many people think Sarah Palin is qualified to be president. Idiots like these are exactly the type of moron that would buy into nonsense about socialism and those without health insurance exercising their freedom to not have health insurance.
Further evidence of how this phenomena has taken hold not only of the lowest tiers of the republican supporters, but among their most elite was in the last presidential primary. When the group of republican contenders stood up at their first debate and the question was asked what they would do in case of a terrorist attack, one of these idiots said "I'd be looking for Jack Bauer." The rest of them applauded as if this nutcase, I think it was Tancredo, had the answer to terrorism.
This is what the republican party, the party of Eisenhower and Teddy Roosevelt, has devolved into. A group of idiots that think movie and television show plots are sound policy basis.
And they still wonder why I deride them. They wonder why so many people that once were proud to call themselves republicans, now run away from that label like the plague. Even the word "conservative" is becoming more of a derogatory term now. By the next election most righties of reasonable intelligence will go to describing themselves as "Libertarian." The smart ones are doing that already.

130 million people voted in the last general election, so if 25% to 30% think Palin is qualified to be President, that's about 40 million people who should be scaring the living daylights out of the sane wing of the republican party. Fortunately you can't win a general election with 25% of the vote, but winning the party nomination is a strong possibility. This is not a good time to be a thoughtful, considerate republican.

I find the your reference to Roosevelt and Eisenhower particularly accurate and know why you view them as, for the lack of a beter adjective, the real Republican party.
Both TR and DE did positive things for their country.
However, TR at his core was a statist as well as a very socialist minded president. And by the preceding statement I am not implying he was a socialist. Although were he alive today I believe he would be.
TR was responsible for significant increases in the size and scope of the Federal Government.
The point I think The Malcontent is really making is this. Government (politicians)is a thing to be feared, as our founding fathers understood.
Our system of government, unlike any other in the world, was based on the the premise that the people retained power and control over the government, not the other way around.
The fear I have, and all should in my opinion is this, where, and at what point, does the growth of government and the resulting infringement on individual liberties stop?
Liberty, granted at the hands of a government with strangulation strength tentacles and the unfettered ability to regulate, is no liberty at all.
It is a reversal of the principals on which the Declaration of Independence stands and the Constitution of the United States was written to insure.
Do I believe we are at that precise point right now? The answer is no. But I do believe that we have been for quite some time travelling down that road at ever increasing speed.
We can not turn the clock back to 1776, nor should we want to. But I, and others who share my values, believe it is time to put the breaks on.
We are all Americans affected by the gradual loss of individual liberties for the sake of the collective. I,and I believe Malcontent just aren't willing to go silently into that dark night.

Regulation helps level the playing field for business also RN. Each business has the same rules so the dishonest don't have an advantage over the honest.

That aside, I do not believe I ever said I am a fan of huge corporations. I to distrust them. I also know they are the money behind much of what goes on in corrupt Washington. On both sides of the aisle. Corporations contribute heavily to Democratic and Republican candidates alike.
The connection between Government and Corporate influence is well known.
I see your point. But until such time as there is meaningful campaign contribution reform, and legislators and lobbyist are held to higher ethical standards not much is likely to change.
And this ain't just a liberal or conservative issue. It is one we all need to be concerned with.
As to regulation, certainly there needs to be some limited regs. But when it comes to the government subsidizing a business so it doesn't fail, or insures special or preferential treatment thats where I jump off the train.
I think we're on the same page RN. Big money runs the government. Big money adds to the size of government through big government contracts and other things. Limit the money going to campaigns and perhaps that will lead to a more limited government.
